Saint Luke, the Doctor Who Wrote a Gospel

Today we remember Saint Luke. He was a doctor, which means he helped sick people get well. He was also one of Jesus' helpers, one of seventy-two friends who shared the good news about God.

Luke was a faithful helper to two great apostles named Peter and Paul, who were among Jesus' closest friends, sent out to teach the world. Luke even wrote down their stories so everyone could remember them. After Peter and Paul went home to God, Luke kept teaching people about Jesus in a faraway city called Rome.

Luke wrote one of the four Gospels in the Bible, the books that tell the good news about Jesus. He wrote it for a friend named Theophilus. Luke also wrote another book of the Bible, called the Acts of the Apostles, which tells how the apostles spread Jesus' love all over the world.

A king named Nero did not want Luke to keep teaching about Jesus. He asked Luke to stop, but Luke was brave and answered kindly and honestly.

Then God showed His power through Luke. Luke prayed, and the people watching saw something that filled them with wonder. A leader, his wife, and many others believed in Jesus that day because of what they saw. Luke had helped them find God.

Luke stayed faithful right to the end of his life, and he died a martyr, loving God so much that he stayed true to Him no matter what. He was not afraid, because he knew he was going home to live with God forever.

His friends placed his body in the sea, and God gently guided the waves until they carried it safely to a little island. There a kind man who loved God found it and gave Luke an honorable resting place. God took care of Luke even after he was gone.

Before all this happened, Luke had given his precious books to a good old fisherman named Silas, so the writings would be kept safe and clean. Because of helpers like Silas, we still have Luke's Gospel in our Bibles today!
