Micah, the Great Prophet

Today we remember a great prophet named Micah. A prophet is someone who listens closely to God and then tells the people what God wants them to know. Micah lived a very, very long time ago, in a land called Judah, back when kings ruled the people.

God gave Micah a special job. God put true words in Micah's mouth, and Micah said them out loud so everyone could hear. Here is the part that is hard to believe: Micah told people about Jesus hundreds and hundreds of years before Jesus was even born. He said that God Himself would come down and walk on the earth with us. That is exactly what happened when Jesus was born.

Micah even named the little town where Jesus would be born. He said it would be Bethlehem, a small town that did not seem important. But God chose it to be the home of the greatest King of all. When Jesus was born in Bethlehem many years later, people remembered that Micah had told them so.

Micah also shared happy news about the future. He said that God's good teaching, and the good news about Jesus, would spread out from the holy city and travel all over the world, to every land and every kind of person. That good news has reached us too, which means Micah's words came true.

Micah lived a long and good life and grew to be very old. When his work was finished, he went home to God, Whom he loved with all his heart. People say he told about Jesus eight hundred years before Jesus came. We thank God for kind, brave Micah, who helped the whole world get ready to welcome Jesus.

Behold, God shall come from His place, and He shall come down and walk upon the earth.— the prophet Micah
