Sara, the Gentle Nun

Long ago in Egypt there lived a holy woman named Sara. Her mother and father loved God, and Sara was their only child. They were very rich, but the best thing they gave her was teaching her about Jesus. They taught her to read and to write, too.

Sara loved to read more than anything. Her favorite books were stories about monks and nuns, the men and women who give their whole lives to praying and loving God. The more Sara read, the more she wanted to live that way too.

So Sara went to live at a nunnery, a quiet home where nuns pray together. She helped the other women there for many years, and then she became a nun herself. She prayed all the time and tried hard to do only good things.

One day a sneaky voice tried to make Sara feel proud, telling her, "You are so strong, Sara, you have beaten every bad thing all by yourself!" But Sara was wise. She knew where her strength really came from, and she answered gently.

Sara taught the younger nuns kind and wise lessons. She told them to remember God every single day, and to always be kind and forgiving to other people. She lived a long, peaceful life of almost eighty years, and then God called her home to live with Him forever in happiness.

It is good to show mercy. If you are kind again and again, you will grow close to the loving heart of God.— Saint Sara

Sulpicius and God's Rescue

On this day we also remember a brave man named Sulpicius. He loved God with all his heart. A powerful king did not like that Sulpicius was a Christian, so he asked him questions to try to scare him.

"Who do you worship?" the king asked. Sulpicius answered without any fear at all. He said he worshipped Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God. He would not pretend, not even a little.

The king tried to frighten Sulpicius, but God protected him and kept him safe. Sulpicius kept loving God to the very end, giving up everything rather than turn away from Jesus. He was not afraid, because he knew he was going home to God, who would welcome him with great joy.

Three More Faithful Friends of God

Today we also remember three more brave Christians: Helyas, Sephinius, and George. Helyas came from a city called 'Ahnas. George is sometimes called "the new George."

Like Sulpicius, these three loved God so much that they stayed faithful to Him no matter what. They became martyrs too. We thank God for friends like these, who showed everyone how much they trusted Him. We can ask these kind saints to pray for us today.
