Faith education for children & youth
What makes a good friend? A good friend likes spending time with you. They talk with you. They also listen well. Jesus had people he cared about too.
Mary and Martha were sisters. They had a brother named Lazarus. They all lived together. These friends truly cared for Jesus. Jesus also cared for them. He enjoyed visiting their home. Their house was a place where he could relax.
Jesus came to visit one day. Martha wanted everything perfect for him. Immediately, she went to the kitchen. She cooked a big meal. Martha hoped Jesus would feel special.
Mary did something else. She sat at Jesus’ feet. She listened to his words. Mary did not want to miss anything.
Martha peeked in. She saw Mary just sitting. Martha wondered why Mary was not helping. She felt upset. Finally, Martha went to Jesus. She asked, “Don’t you care that my sister left me to do all the work? Tell her to help me!”
Jesus smiled kindly. He said, “Martha, Martha, you are worried about many things. You are too busy. Mary has chosen the better thing. It will not be taken from her.”
Jesus was teaching Martha an important lesson. Spending time with him was more important than always being busy.
